In Week 2, as part of our dissertation module, we had a lecture dedicated to the library resources that are available to us. This included where to find the documents, what type of documents are available and the best way to use them.
Journals
Journals give the most up to date information. Two types of journals are:
- Trade magazines - short articles, advertisements, photographs
- Academic journals - scholarly journals, peer reviewed. Written by experts in the field of research. Longer articles which have a definite structure. Images will be tables, graphs etc. Substantial bibliographies
Some of the journals that would relate to IXD include:
- Art & Architecture source
- Art Bibliographies modern
- Design and applied art index
Databases
There are three main database tools available to use, which are:
- USearch - library discovery tool
- Proquest Complete

💡
Some searching tips…
- KEYWORDS - break your topic into words or phrases
- SYNONYMS - identify words/phrases which have a similar meaning as your term
- TRUNCATE - shorten words to retrieve all variations, using the * symbol (tech*)
- QUOTATION MARKS - use quotation marks to keep 2 or more words together in your search
Good search terms to use are impact | effect | issues | role | engagement | influences | motivation | strategies
Also make sure that all spelling is correct. Limit results to Academic or Scholarly journal, as well as the year span.
