In Week 3 I will have to pitch my dissertation idea to my lecturers and class, explaining what my idea is and the subject, what I am going to write about, what I have found online and if possible, my research question.
I found this was a good way to try and work out for myself what I wanted my dissertation to be about, because at this point I only had a subject area, but no real details. So using post it notes, I create 5 columns, based on the five objectives for my pitch. Then while I was carrying out my subject area research and readings, if anything came to mind or jumped out, I noted it down and added it to the related column. I found this an easy way to organise all my thoughts and clearly see what direction I wanted my dissertation to go in. I noted down any key buzz words as well, whether for essay sections, titles or research question. I feel like this gives me a good starting point to write my dissertation.
While I had done some previous research and brainstorming into my research question, this was a much more specific and refined subject area. I plan on looking at my final brainstorm, which is pictured below, and forming my research question from this, but still keep my previous brainstorming in mind.
I found it more difficult than I expected to come up with a research question. I had a number of things I wanted to write about, so trying to come up with a question that covers all these points.
I went back to my initial research question ideas, but I found that my idea had drifted away from that. I’m not solely focusing on injury prevention, but the role of AI across the stages of ACL injuries.
I was trying to think of buzz words like ‘role’, ‘impact’, ‘experience’ etc. that could help form my question. So I decided to break it down and simplify my thoughts, as the questions I was coming up with were seeming very complicated and wordy.
So going into my pitch, I came up with the following question:
How will AI impact the way we treat ACL injuries?
My thoughts are that this will help me discuss all aspects, from diagnosis to prevention to rehabilitation, while also discussing the people’s experience and future concepts, along with limitations/ethical concerns.
