A successful academic research paper…

Is a survey or summary of what’s out there about your chosen topic, with your comments added along the way.

You’re not comparing someone’s work to what you think it should be - that’s CRITICISM

Success - how well you synthesise the ideas of others

Include small nuggets of brilliance…thoughts you have had while comparing and contrasting other people’s work.

My Job:

To find and map the sources valuable to your exploration, synthesise them, and make remarks that bond one to the next.

Synthesise - it means boiling down your research down to each source’s essential ideas and then relating those ideas to one another, in fresh and appealing ways.


It’s not a sprint. Think like a marathoner.

Start prepping weeks in advance and adopt a manageable pace.
